The game has big graphical errors that make it unplayable on WIN10. :(. I have spent more time on this game as a kid than I care to tell. Before I get into what the game offers, do keep in mind that it came out in 1999 (Windows), so the graphics and capabilities aren't going to have all the bells and whistles of modern games. If you are into games in the same genre as Diablo, this will be right up your alley. I will update this as I get further into the game.Want to play a caster who can become a werewolf? Want to play a thief, identify items yourself, and make bank? This game has a bunch of neat ideas that may interest you. While not exactly new, these ideas work rather well. It works relatively well on Win10, but the game shows its age. The lack of a clear story besides "Kill main bad guy" may be a dealbreaker for some, but it can give some fairly decent creative license. The dungeons and side quests aren't 100% the same for each playthrough. There are multiple dungeons and sidequests that are possible, with the game selecting from the quest pool at random from the start of a new adventure/playthrough. Without spoiling much, the playable character ages as time passes, discouraging dawdling, but an item to shave off a few "years" can be obtained later on in the game. Instead of having one dungeon per area like in the Playstation port, each area has 2. The game allows some class customization in the builds, like a battle mage, but each class has a specific strength and weakness. Of the four classes (warrior, mage, thief, and monk), I recommend going with either the mage or thief class, since both start with some form of ranged combat. Townsfolk will randomly give you sidequests if you talk with them. The quests/dungeons are pretty interesting with minor puzzlesolving, a fair bit of hack n' slashing, and periodically grabbing some treasure for a monetary reward from some sidequest. The town has what you will need, being the smith, inn/food shop, magical item vendor, somebody to identify items/remove curses, a tradeskill teacher/vendor, a bank, and a skippable "tutorial" area. The skills can immediately benefit you, with skills like repairing armor, identifying items, or getting better deals at vendors. I highly recommend getting skills when you can, with higher tiers of the skill(s) being unlocked as you level your character. In short: pretty good game, all things considered. While not aging like fine wine, it still has its merits. Pick it up when it is on sale, and give it a try.. I still consider the original Diablo one of my favorite ARPGs of all time. I doubt this is a controversial statement as it helped spawn an entire genre, but the slow pace, uneven threats, and gothic horror cemented it as a game I could come back to again and again. I would never recommend anyone try it for the first time now though, at least not without enormous disclaimers. It’s a game that hasn’t aged well not for anything it did wrong, but because the genre has moved so far beyond it. Darkstone is another victim of this phenomenon, though honestly I’m not sure I would have had the patience for it even at its release.Draak is back, baby, and he’s brought a whole cult to ♥♥♥♥ things up for everyone. The merciless dragon has come to imperil the kingdom and it’s up to you to stop him, apparently by finding seven macguffins that will do… something and let you fight him. You’ll need to delve deep into the randomized dungeons just outside of town, battling skeletons and goblins and all of high fantasy’s greatest hits while snatching loot to make yourself more formidable. There’s plenty of odd dungeon denizens to encounter as well like the lonely ice golem or the walled-off mad wizard, and they might even provide a challenge that the regular foes don’t.There’s a lot of criticism to unpack here but at the heart of it is the simple fact that you’ve played this before. Maybe not with exactly the same systems or combat but you’ve played a warrior or wizard descending into dungeons to kill spiders and bats and get loot. The fact that this is a loose Diablo imitation doesn’t do much, especially since we’re decades past its main selling point of being 3D Diablo. None of the enemies are unique or interesting, they all attack in exactly the way you’re imagining, and what few differentiating elements they have are more annoyances than anything. This is the kind of game where poison never goes away until you take an antidote, for example. An hour into the game got me to level 7 and a slightly better club than the sword I was using. The items are just as uninteresting as the enemies, and the few enchanted pieces I found were extremely simple stat boosts. I don’t know how long it takes to start finding stuff worth using, but in this day and age it’s too long for me. Other design annoyances abound like the stiff camera that likes to take low angles blocked by walls, and the janky movement that feels stuck to an invisible, misaligned grid. In addition to managing health and mana you need to eat to stay alive, which would be little more than an annoying gold sink if you didn’t find bushels of apples and cherries in the dungeons. You’ll be deluged with boring loot that will barely fit into your tiny inventory, prompting plenty of trips back to town to unload if you have the portal scrolls for it.I know I’ve been relentless against this game but I don’t really think it’s bad, it’s just a game out of time. Back at release it would have held up much better as a simpler, 3D Diablo clone but at this point the genre has built upon every single aspect of its design. It does exactly one thing that’s semi-unique, which is letting you run two characters at a time and granting them both experience based on how much damage they do. It’s not a perfect system but I sure would love more ARPGs to let me level two characters at once. Maybe some future game will pick up on it so we can finally lay Darkstone to rest in the halls of gaming history, because it makes a much better historical reference than game.Did you enjoy this review? I certainly hope so, and I certainly hope you'll check out more of them at https://goldplatedgames.com/ or on my curation page!. First hour of gameplay:- Learned a spell to turn into a werewolf.- Attacked a goblin farmer who kept a 1000 chickens in the depths of a dungeon.- Get mobbed by said chickens. As a werewolf, run away from chicken mob.- Go further into dungeon.- Talk to some cult. Get given a 'choose the right door or die' quest. - Amazingly pick the right door the first time. Instead of advancing, doing the quest and saving the game, i go ahead and try a different door for fun. A wraith comes out and kills me in two hits.Darkstone is the first serious non-jrpg that i got hooked on over 10 years ago. And it is great. If you don't mind the graphics, do a playthrough for the nostalgia factor alone.Positives:+ Quest System. Tons of crazy quests, a mixture of puzzle solving and 'o♥♥♥♥♥♥ moments.+ Level Design+ Music. I normally mute music on all the games i play. But Darkstone hits it perfect.+ Items- A mixture of unidentified, cursed, and powerfull.+ On single-player, you can play two characters at once. Its like two RPGs for the price of one.Negatives:- Outdated graphics.- Glitchy movement system- if you move the mouse too far towards the edge of the screen you stop moving. It is also sometimes hard to hit breakable objects.- No easy way to spot items on the ground.- Small inventory and no place to store items.. My friends hate this game. I love it.
